My resume could not be read: what each message means
The scanner refuses a file it cannot read properly and tells you why. Most cases are fixed by exporting a clean text based PDF with your contact details at the top.
Messages you may see
"Missing phone number"
WhyNo phone number was found in the resume, so recruiters would have no way to reach you.
FixAdd your number as plain text near the top and upload again. If you are signed in, the number on your profile is used instead.
"Missing email"
WhyNo email address was found in the file.
FixAdd your email at the top of the resume, as text rather than an image or icon.
"Resume looks empty"
WhyNo text could be read, which almost always means the file is a scan or a photo.
FixRebuild it in a word processor and export a text based PDF.
"Doesn't look like a resume"
WhyThe file reads like something else, for example a certificate or a cover letter.
FixUpload the CV that has your experience, education and skills.
"Resume needs more detail"
WhyToo little could be read with confidence.
FixUpload a clearer PDF that includes your contact details and work history.
"Couldn't open this file"
WhyThe file could not be opened at all, often a damaged export.
FixRe-save it as PDF and upload the new copy.
"Password protected"
WhyThe PDF is locked.
FixRemove the password, save a fresh copy and upload that.
"Unsupported format"
WhyThe file is not a PDF, DOC or DOCX.
FixConvert it and upload again.
"File too big"
WhyThe file is over the size limit.
FixCompress the PDF or remove images, keeping it under 5 MB.
"Upload failed" or "Error processing your file"
WhySomething went wrong that the checks could not name.
FixTry once more on a stable connection, then with a freshly exported PDF.
A file the scanner reads cleanly
- Name, phone number and email as plain text at the top
- One column, no text boxes and no tables
- Standard headings such as Work Experience, Education and Skills
- Exported as PDF from a word processor, under 5 MB

It is probably inside an image, a header or a text box that the reader cannot open. Put it in the normal body of the document.
Is a rejected upload counted against my free scan?
A file that was refused never produced a report, so there is nothing to score. Your scan is spent only when a report is generated.
