Reverse chronological is the only layout worth using. Put the most recent role first, work backwards, and keep the dates in plain view. Functional resumes that group everything under a Software heading and drop the dates read as an attempt to hide a gap, and consultancy reviewers, who care about continuous design experience, treat them that way. A gap is better explained in one honest line than buried. What sets a structural resume apart is that the reader wants two things software alone cannot show: the structures you have designed, and the codes you designed them to. A resume that says "proficient in STAAD.Pro and ETABS" but never names a building, a span or an IS code reads as someone who ran an analysis, not someone who designed a structure. Name the structure type (RCC residential, steel industrial, high-rise), the scale (G plus 8, 30 metre span, 40 storeys) and the codes (IS 456, IS 800, IS 1893). Length follows evidence. Naming the IS codes matters more than naming the software
The single most common structural resume failure is a page that lists STAAD.Pro, ETABS, SAP2000, SAFE, Tekla and Revit across the top and never names a single IS code, a single structure or a single design decision. A parser matches the software, but a design manager reads it and cannot tell whether you designed a building or watched someone else press run. The software is the tool. The code is the engineering. The fix is to let the work name the code. If you designed an RCC building, say to IS 456 and IS 1893. If you designed steel, say to IS 800. If you ran the wind load, say to IS 875 Part 3. The mid-level sample says "to IS 456, IS 800 and IS 1893" inside the ownership bullet precisely because that is the language a proof checker and a design manager share. It signals you know which clause governs, not just which button to click. Name the structures and their scale. "Designed a G plus 12 RCC tower", "a 30 metre span steel industrial building", "a 40-storey tower with an outrigger system" each tell a reviewer immediately what class of problem you have handled. A resume that says "designed various structures" has told them nothing. Scale and structure type are how a design lead places your experience. Be honest about the boundary between analysis and design. Modelling a building in ETABS is analysis. Sizing the members, checking them to the code, detailing the reinforcement and issuing the drawing is design. A resume that claims design but describes only modelling is exposed by the first technical question, so describe what you actually took responsibility for.
For every structure on your resume, a reviewer wants three things: the type (RCC, steel, high-rise), the scale (storeys or span) and the code (IS 456, 800, 1893). Software without those three reads as an operator, not an engineer.
Writing a summary a design manager actually reads
The block under your name is the part you can be reasonably sure gets read, so it should carry four facts: the structures you design, how long you have designed them, the codes you work to, and the strongest thing that happened because of your design. Three or four lines, no adjectives that cannot be checked against a drawing set. The old objective line, seeking a challenging position in a reputed organisation to utilise your structural engineering skills, tells the reader nothing they did not assume. Replace it with a summary. An objective describes what you want; a summary describes what you have already designed, in tonnage saved, in a proof check passed, or in a foundation solved, and only one is evidence. Freshers often believe they have nothing to summarise. Look at the fresher sample: it names the M.Tech, states the internship, and points at two projects with the codes, the methods and an honest result. That is a genuine summary built from a degree, one internship and two projects. What it avoids is "passionate about structures", a phrase so common on graduate resumes it now carries no information. A practical test: read your summary and ask whether a classmate with the same M.Tech could paste it onto their resume unchanged. If they could, it describes the course, not you. Add the specific structure, the specific code and the specific result until it stops being transferable.

Experience bullets: verb, structure, consequence
Every strong bullet in the samples follows the same shape. It opens with an action verb, names the specific structure or design change you made, and closes with what measurably moved. The verb establishes that you did it. The structure and code tell a technical reviewer whether the work is relevant. The number does the persuading. Start with the outcome and work backwards. Engineers usually write the task first, then struggle to attach a number, which produces bullets like "worked on the structural design of buildings using ETABS". Instead ask what was different because of your design: a tonnage dropped, a proof check passed first time, a foundation cost fell, a site query rate went down, a model-error count halved. Then write the sentence that ends in that fact. Vary the metric. In structural work you can honestly reach for steel or concrete tonnage, foundation or substructure cost, proof-check comments, storeys or span designed, site query rate, and model-setup errors caught. A page of nothing but tonnage reads as one dimension. An engineer who also improved a proof-check pass rate and cut site queries reads as an all-round designer. Where you lack a number, give scale: how many storeys, what span, which code, how many projects coordinated. "Led the structural design of a 40-storey tower through proof check with no major comment" carries weight without inventing a percentage. And distinguish what you designed from what you supported, because a reviewer will ask, and a bullet that overstates your role is worse than one that states a smaller role honestly.

The skills section: grouped, honest, and short enough to defend
A structural resume's skills section has two audiences with opposite preferences. The parser wants literal terms it can match, STAAD.Pro and ETABS and IS 456. A human wants a short, organised list that signals what kind of structural engineer you are, buildings or industrial or infrastructure, RCC or steel, design or detailing. Grouping satisfies both. Group by function rather than one long line. Design and codes, analysis software, detailing and drafting, and foundations is a grouping that works for almost every structural engineer. The exact headings matter less than the fact that structure exists. Write names the way the industry writes them: STAAD.Pro not Staad, ETABS not Etabs, IS 456 not IS456, SAP2000 not SAP 2000. A parser matches on strings. Twelve to sixteen skills is the working range. Below eight the section looks thin. Above twenty it stops being a signal. Be honest about the software: listing STAAD.Pro, ETABS, SAP2000, SAFE, Tekla, Revit, RISA and RAM when you have driven two of them is padding an interviewer exposes with one question about a Tekla connection model. Where education and certifications belong
Education goes at the bottom for anyone with a full-time job, and near the top for a fresher, who has nothing stronger to lead with. For structural engineers the M.Tech Structural Engineering is worth naming clearly alongside the B.E. Civil, because the specialisation is what qualifies you for a design role over a general civil one. Degree, institution, years for both. A GATE score is worth keeping prominently while you are a fresher or early-career, because it gates M.Tech admission and PSU recruitment, and a structural role often values it. State the score or rank and the year. Once you have a few years of design delivery, GATE matters less and can move down. CGPA or percentage is worth keeping while it is good and you are early-career, roughly 7.5 out of 10 and above. After your first design role, the structures you have delivered and the proof checks you have passed are far more predictive, so let CGPA drop. Certifications sit just below education, or beside skills if you hold only one or two. For structural engineers the ones that carry weight are the Chartered Engineer status from the Institution of Engineers (India), formal software certifications from CSI or Bentley for ETABS and STAAD, and where relevant an international qualification. Write the full name, the issuing body and the year, and never list a lapsed certification as current.
Getting through the applicant tracking system
Large design consultancies, AECOM, WSP, Jacobs, L&T, Tata Consulting Engineers, and the recruitment firms that staff them, run resumes through an applicant tracking system before a human sees them. An ATS is a parser and a search index, not a judge. It reads your file, tries to break it into name, dates, employers, titles and skills, and stores the result so a recruiter can search across candidates. Almost every ATS problem is a parsing problem, and parsing problems come from layout, not wording. The layout rules are short. One column. Standard section headings, so use Work Experience rather than My Design Journey, and Skills rather than My Toolkit. No text inside images, because a rendering of a building reads as empty space. No critical information in the header or footer region, which some parsers drop. Avoid text boxes and nested tables in the resume body. On wording, mirror the language of the job description where it is honest. If the posting says STAAD.Pro, write STAAD.Pro. If it says RCC design or IS 456, write those exactly. Include the expansion alongside an acronym at least once, for example "RCC (reinforced cement concrete)" and "BBS (bar bending schedule)", so both searches find you. Write the IS-code numbers as text, because a recruiter often searches on IS 456 or IS 1893 directly. Keyword stuffing does not work. A hidden block of every structural software in white text is found quickly, and the outcome is worse than being filtered. Write real bullets that naturally contain the right terms, because a bullet describing an RCC tower you designed to IS 456 contains the term in a context that survives human review too. - A photo, date of birth, marital status or father's name. None belongs on a technical structural resume, and each takes a project's space.
- Not naming the structure type or scale. A reviewer needs to know RCC or steel, buildings or industrial, and how tall or how long a span.
- A generic objective line. Replace it with a summary stating structures, codes, years and one result.
- Inflated titles or a design role overstated. Structural background checks and technical interviews are thorough, and an overstated role ends the process.
