Design projects: describe the engineering, not the CAD

Describe what you designed, what target or duty you were designing to, what the governing load case or method was, and what you concluded. The chassis project in the sample is strong because it names a real target, a 12 percent mass cut at held stiffness, and because it says the student hand-checked a load case before trusting the FEA, which is exactly the judgement a design office wants. Pick projects that show range rather than three variants of the same CAD model. A design and structural analysis project, a thermal or fluids project, and a manufacturing or automation project together show you can move across the areas a graduate trainee gets rotated through. Two well-described projects beat five listed by name. Team engineering projects, SAE Baja, Supra, Efficycle, a robotics build, are strong entries because they involve real fabrication, testing and a working result, so describe your specific role and one measurable outcome rather than just naming the team. If a simulation is on the resume, be ready to defend it. State the load case or boundary conditions and whether you validated the result, because an interviewer will ask what the mesh was and whether you believed the number. Group them so both the parser and the human can read them: CAD and modelling, simulation and analysis, manufacturing and quality, and the core engineering subjects you are strong in. Twelve to sixteen items is plenty, and every one is a question you have agreed to answer, so list only software you can actually open and use, not everything the syllabus touched.
