Reverse chronological is the only layout worth using. Put the most recent role first, work backwards, and let the dates sit in plain view. Functional resumes that group everything under Technical Skills and quietly drop the dates read as an attempt to hide a gap, and plant managers treat them that way. A gap is better explained in one honest line than buried. Length is decided by evidence. One page holds everything a fresher and most engineers up to roughly six years have to say. Past that, a second page is fine when it carries real plant work, revamps and safety-study leadership rather than a longer list of unit operations. A page two built from a declaration paragraph and a hobbies line is a padded one-page resume. Four things belong nowhere on a technical resume here: a photograph, date of birth, marital status and father's name. They survive from an older template that circulated through campus placement cells. Nobody screening a process engineer is looking for them, and every line they occupy is a line a project or a plant result could have used. Send a PDF unless the posting asks for DOCX, and name the file with your own name and the target role rather than resume_final_v4. Naming a unit operation is not the same as proving you improved it

The single most common chemical resume failure is a skills line that reads Distillation, Absorption, Extraction, Crystallisation, Heat Transfer, Fluid Flow, Reaction Engineering, Mass Transfer, Filtration, Drying with no bullet anywhere that shows any of it moving a real number. A parser matches those terms, but a plant manager reads the wall and assumes it is the syllabus copied onto a page, then looks for the one column you can actually troubleshoot. The fix is to let the experience prove the domain. If you write distillation on the skills line, at least one bullet should describe a column you optimised, a flooding trip you removed or a recovery you lifted. If you write pinch analysis, a bullet should show the steam or fuel-gas number it changed. The process-engineer sample lists distillation, energy optimisation and HAZOP precisely because the bullets show a splitter recovery lifted, steam per tonne cut and a debottlenecking HAZOP led. The skills line and the experience agree, which is what makes both believable. Be specific about the plant and the medium. Petrochemical, refining, specialty chemicals, pharma API and fertiliser are different worlds, and a reviewer wants to know which one you have lived in. Naming the section, the throughput and the product tells them far more than a generic unit-operations list. A number reconciled against DCS data reads as real; a round figure with no basis reads as a guess. Do not list every software package you once opened. Writing Aspen HYSYS, Aspen Plus, PRO/II, ChemCAD, DWSIM, gPROMS, COMSOL, ANSYS Fluent on a page where no bullet shows a model that changed a plant decision reads as padding. Name the two you actually build in, and show one model that reached the field.

For every unit operation and software on your skills line, ask: is there a bullet that proves I improved something with it. If not, either add the bullet or cut the item. A wall of unit operations helps the parser and hurts the interview.

Writing a summary a plant manager actually reads

The block under your name is the part you can be reasonably sure gets read, so it should carry three facts: what you run or design, how long you have been doing it, and the strongest thing that happened in the plant because of your work. Three or four lines, no adjectives that cannot be checked. The old objective line, seeking a challenging position in a reputed organisation to utilise your chemical engineering skills, tells the reader nothing they did not assume from the application. Replace it with a summary. An objective describes what you want, a summary describes what you have already done, and only one is evidence. Freshers often believe they have nothing to summarise. Look at the fresher sample: it names the tools, states the internship length, and points at a simulation project that cut a real steam number and a plant task that caught a yield gap. That is a genuine summary built from coursework, one internship and design projects. What it avoids is "hardworking and passionate about process engineering", a phrase so common on graduate resumes it now carries no information. A practical test: read your summary and ask whether a batchmate with the same degree and GATE score could paste it onto their resume unchanged. If they could, it describes the course, not you. Add the specific section, the specific number and the specific ownership until it stops being transferable.

Experience bullets: verb, unit, consequence

Every strong bullet in the samples follows the same shape. It opens with an action verb, names the specific unit or change you worked on, and closes with what measurably moved in the plant. The verb establishes that you did it. The unit tells a technical reviewer whether the work is relevant. The number does the persuading. Start with the outcome and work backwards. Engineers usually write the task first, then struggle to attach a number, which produces bullets like "worked on process optimisation of the distillation column and improved performance". Instead ask what was different in the plant after you finished: a recovery is higher, a trip stopped recurring, steam per tonne dropped, a catalyst cycle stretched, a throughput rose. Then write the sentence that ends in that fact. Vary the metric. Five yield numbers in a row read as one trick repeated. Across a real role you can honestly reach for recovery, specific energy, throughput, chemical or fuel cost, trips avoided, catalyst cycle length and safety actions closed. The process-engineer sample uses several metric types across its bullets, which reads as range. Where you lack a clean number, give scope: how many P&IDs, how many HAZOP actions closed, how many crude slates, how long a turnaround ran. "Closed 22 of 27 HAZOP actions for a debottlenecking project that raised throughput by 6 percent" carries weight without inventing a false precision. Allocate bullets by recency. Current role gets five or six, the previous role four or five, anything older two or three.

If a bullet would read identically on a batchmate's resume, it is describing the plant, not you. Rewrite it until it only fits the section you actually ran.

The skills section: grouped, honest, and short enough to defend

A chemical resume's skills section has two audiences with opposite preferences. The parser wants literal terms it can match, distillation and Aspen HYSYS and HAZOP. A human wants a short, organised list that signals what kind of engineer you are. Grouping satisfies both. Group by function rather than one long line. Process, simulation, safety, tools and practices is a grouping that works for almost every chemical engineer. The exact headings matter less than the fact that structure exists. Write names the way the industry writes them: Aspen HYSYS not Hysis, P&ID not PID, HAZOP not Hazop. A parser matches on strings. Twelve to sixteen skills is the working range. Below eight the section looks thin. Above twenty it stops being a signal, and a chemical resume is especially prone to unit-operations padding: listing distillation, absorption, extraction, crystallisation, evaporation, drying, filtration and leaching as eight items when the role wants to know which sections you have actually run. The list is a contract: every item is a question you have agreed to answer. Do not include a proficiency bar. For a fresher, projects and internships are the resume. The common failure is describing the topic instead of the work. "A project on distillation column design using Aspen" tells a reviewer nothing, because hundreds of resumes carry that exact line. Describe what you designed or studied, what data you validated against, and what was genuinely hard. The separation-train project in the fresher sample is a stronger entry than a flashier title would be, because it names a real number, the tool and the two assumptions a reviewer could challenge. Pick projects that show range rather than three column-design studies. One simulation validated against plant or published data, one that shows safety thinking such as a scale-up heat-removal limit, and one with a cost or optimisation angle is a stronger set than three variations of the same textbook problem. Two well-described projects beat five listed by title. Internships and vocational plant training count and are often undersold. Name the plant, what you actually did on the unit, and the one thing you found or fixed. A near-miss you logged and closed, a P&ID you corrected against the field, a yield gap you traced, all read as real plant exposure that a purely academic resume cannot claim.

Education goes at the bottom for anyone with a full-time job, and near the top for a fresher, who has nothing stronger to lead with. Degree, institution, years. That is the whole entry for most people. CGPA or percentage is worth keeping while you are a fresher and it is good, roughly 7.5 out of 10 and above, because campus and early-career screening still filters on it. A GATE score stays useful longer than most, especially for PSU and core-sector roles where it is part of the selection, so keep it near the top while it is relevant. Once you have a few years of plant work, the number matters less than what you have run. Coursework lines are for freshers only, and only when directly relevant. Process control, transport phenomena, reaction engineering and process safety are worth naming for a process role. Generic engineering mathematics is not. Skip school details once you have a degree. Certifications sit just below education, or beside skills if you hold only one or two. Write the full name, the issuing body and the year. Getting through the applicant tracking system

An applicant tracking system is a parser and a search index, not a judge. It reads your file, tries to break it into name, dates, employers, titles and skills, and stores the result so a recruiter can search across candidates. Almost every ATS problem is a parsing problem, and parsing problems come from layout, not wording. The layout rules are short. One column. Standard section headings, so use Work Experience rather than My Journey, and Skills rather than My Toolbox. No text inside images, because a plant-photo strip or a logo band reads as empty space. No critical information in the header or footer region, which some parsers drop. Avoid text boxes and nested tables in the resume body.   • Inflated titles or dates that do not match your payslips and offer letters. Background verification is standard and a mismatch ends the process.
  • Typos in the technologies you claim to know. Writing "Aspen HYSYS" as "Hysis" or "reflux" as "reflex" undoes an otherwise strong page.

The same goes for date of birth, marital status, father's name, nationality and a declaration paragraph. These come from an older template that spread through campus placement cells and add nothing to a technical screen. The only exception is a role that explicitly asks for a photograph in the posting.
