3 Accountant Resume Examples, Format and Guide

An accountant resume is judged on accuracy, the tools you run, and whether your numbers can be trusted. Most resumes in India list handled accounts, maintained ledgers and did GST filing without stating the volume of transactions, the software, or a single result. Below are three complete resumes, one each for a fresher, a mid-level accountant and a senior finance professional, followed by the format rules and the exact keywords an applicant tracking system scans for. Each sample is a full document, not a fragment: summary, experience with real figures, skills, certifications and education, in the order a finance hiring manager expects.

The format that works for accountant resumes in India

Reverse chronological is the only layout worth using. Most recent role first, work backwards, dates in plain view. Functional resumes that hide dates under skill clusters read, to a finance reviewer, as an attempt to obscure a gap, and finance is a field built on the assumption that your numbers are honest, so any hint of concealment costs you disproportionately. What an accountant resume must do that others need not is state the software, the volume and the compliance record. Handled accounts is a duty. Recorded 400 vouchers a month in Tally Prime and filed GST for 12 clients with zero late fees is a resume. Name the tool, name the volume, and name the statutory record, because those three are what a finance manager screens for. One page holds everything a fresher and most accountants up to roughly six years need. A senior finance professional can run to two, if the second page carries real scope rather than a longer software list. Send a PDF unless the posting asks for DOCX, name the file with your name and target role, and use a single column so an applicant tracking system reads it in order. Four things belong nowhere on the resume: a photograph, date of birth, marital status and father's name. They add nothing to a finance screen. The table below sets the section order.

SectionWhere it goesWhy
Name and headlineTop, above everythingThe headline names the level: junior accountant, senior accountant, finance manager.
Professional summaryDirectly under the headerThree lines. Years, software, and your strongest accuracy or close result.
Work experienceNext, for anyone with a jobMost recent first, with volume, software and compliance record on the current role.
SkillsBelow experienceAccounting areas, tax compliance and the software you run.
EducationBottom, unless a fresherB.Com, M.Com and CA are the expected credentials. State clearly.
CertificationsAfter education, or beside skillsTally, GST practitioner, CA stage. Name the issuer and stage cleared.
Software proficiencyA short line near skillsTally, SAP, Zoho Books, Excel. The first thing a finance recruiter filters on.

Writing a summary a finance manager actually reads

The block under your name is the only part a hiring manager is guaranteed to read, so it must carry three facts: what you account for and in which software, how long you have done it, and your strongest result, whether that is close time, accuracy or a clean compliance record. Three or four lines, no adjectives that cannot be checked. The old objective line, a hardworking and sincere accountant seeking a challenging role in a reputed organisation, tells a finance manager nothing and signals you have no number to lead with. Replace it with a summary built from your actual work: the turnover you handle, the software you run, the days you take to close. A finance summary with no figure in it reads as unproven. Freshers often think they have nothing to summarise. Look at the fresher sample: it names the software, the internship length, the voucher volume, the accuracy and the GST clients filed. That is a real summary from one internship. What it avoids is sincere and dedicated worker, phrases that now carry no information. Rewrite the summary for each meaningfully different role. A GST heavy compliance role and a management accounting role want different emphasis in those three lines. Two minutes of editing, and it is the highest leverage change you can make.

Professional summary, mid-level accountant
Weak

Sincere and hardworking accountant with 5 years of experience seeking a challenging role in a reputed organisation to utilise my accounting skills and grow with the company.

Strong

Accountant with five years running full books for a 40 crore manufacturing business, owning the monthly close, GST and TDS compliance, and cutting the close from 12 days to 5 with a standard scrutiny checklist.

The rewrite replaces self description with turnover, ownership, the compliance areas and a measured close result, which is what a finance manager screens on.

Experience bullets: what you did, in what software, to what figure

Every strong bullet in the samples follows one shape. It opens with an action verb, names the accounting task and the software, and ends in a number: volume processed, days to close, rupees recovered, notices avoided, days of debtor ageing cut. Recorded, reconciled, filed, recovered, closed. The number does the persuading, and in accounts it is nearly always available. The common failure is the duty bullet. Responsible for maintaining accounts and handling GST describes the job posting, not what you did. Ask instead: how many transactions, in which tool, and what improved. Then write the sentence that ends in that fact. Where a task has no obvious metric, attach the volume or the compliance outcome: filed for 12 clients with zero late fees carries weight without inventing a percentage. Vary the metric. Five close time numbers in a row read as one improvement described five ways. Across a role you can honestly reach for transaction volume, close days, credit recovered, debtor days, audit adjustments, notices avoided and payment error rate. The mid-level sample uses six different types. Never inflate a figure. Finance hiring runs reference and background checks, and an exaggerated turnover or a claimed CA stage that does not hold up ends the process immediately. In this field, a small honest number beats a large invented one every time.

LevelWhat bullets must proveTypical metric
FresherYou can record and reconcile accurately in real softwareVoucher volume, accuracy, GST clients filed, backlog cleared
1 to 3 yearsYou own a company's routine books and complianceTurnover handled, close days, debtor days, reconciliation done
4 to 6 yearsYou own the close, tax and audit for an entityClose time, credit recovered, notices avoided, audit adjustments
7 years and upYou lead the finance function and its controlsGroup close, clean record, savings, team, MIS turnaround
Experience bullet, GST compliance
Weak

Responsible for GST filing, TDS and other statutory compliance work as required by the company.

Strong

File GSTR-1, GSTR-3B and annual GSTR-9 on time every period, with zero notices or late fees across two years.

The duty version fits any accountant; the rewrite names the exact returns, the cadence and the clean statutory record.

Experience bullet, reconciliation
Weak

Handled reconciliation of accounts and ensured proper matching of entries in the books.

Strong

Reconcile input tax credit against GSTR-2B each month, recovering an average of 1.8 lakh in credit that had previously been missed.

States the specific reconciliation, the source document and the money it actually recovered, so an interviewer can ask a real follow up.

If a bullet names a task but no software and no figure, it is describing the job title. Add the tool and the number until it only fits you.

The skills section: accounting areas, tax and software

An accountant's skills section serves two audiences. The applicant tracking system wants literal terms it can match, so Tally, GST, TDS, bank reconciliation and accounts payable must appear as written. A finance manager wants to see which areas you own and which software you run. Group the list so both are served. Group by accounting area, compliance and software rather than dumping thirty words into one line. Area covers accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger, close and reporting. Compliance covers GST, TDS, income tax and audit support. Software covers the exact tools, written the industry way, Tally Prime not tally, SAP FICO not sap, Zoho Books not zoho, because parsers match on strings and finance recruiters filter hard on software. Twelve to sixteen skills is the working range. Below eight it looks thin, above twenty it stops distinguishing you. Every skill is a claim an interviewer can test, often with a practical, so if you cannot pass a Tally entry test do not lead with Tally expert. Put the software and areas you are strongest in first. Skip star ratings, nobody agrees what four stars in Excel means, and finance is the one field where they will make you prove it live.

Strong

Accounting: accounts payable, accounts receivable, month end close. Compliance: GST, TDS, statutory audit support. Software: Tally Prime, SAP FICO. Reporting: MIS, advanced Excel, bank reconciliation.

Cuts unprovable traits like honest and punctual, keeps the exact software and compliance terms an ATS searches, and groups the rest so a manager reads it in one pass.

Getting through the applicant tracking system

An applicant tracking system is a parser and a search index, not a judge. It reads your file, breaks it into name, dates, employers, titles and skills, and stores the result so a recruiter can search across candidates. Almost every ATS problem is a layout problem, not a wording one. The layout rules are short. One column. Standard section headings, so Work Experience and Skills rather than My Accounting Journey and My Expertise. No text inside images, since a software logo strip reads as empty space. Keep nothing critical in the header or footer region, which some parsers drop. Avoid text boxes and nested tables for the body. On wording, mirror the posting where honest. If it says GST compliance, write GST compliance. If it names Tally Prime, name it exactly. Spell an acronym out once alongside the short form, for example TDS (tax deducted at source), so both searches find you. Your figures double as keywords: a bullet stating GSTR-3B and input tax credit naturally contains the exact terms a finance recruiter searches. Keyword stuffing does not work, and in finance it reads especially poorly because the field prizes honesty. Write real bullets that contain the right terms because you did the work. Finally, export a real text PDF, open it, and confirm you can select and copy a sentence. If you cannot select the text, neither can the parser.

Parsers look for standard headings; a creative one can drop the whole block into an unclassified bucket.

Test your own file before sending it. Copy the text out of the PDF into a plain text editor. Whatever you can read there is roughly what the parser sees.

What gets accountant resumes rejected

Most rejections at the resume stage are not close calls. They come from a small set of recurring problems, all fixable in an afternoon. The list below covers what recruiters of Indian accounting resumes see most often, in rough order of how much damage each one does.

  • No software named. A finance recruiter filters on Tally, SAP or Zoho first, and a resume that omits the tool is often skipped.
  • Duty bullets copied from the job description. Responsible for maintaining accounts tells a manager nothing you did.
  • No volume or figures. Transaction count, close days, credit recovered, debtor days. Pick whichever is honest.
  • Honest, sincere and hardworking listed as skills. Unprovable traits waste the line a software name should hold.
  • An unclear CA status. State the stage precisely: CA Inter both groups cleared, or CA Final pending. Ambiguity reads as inflation.
  • A generic objective instead of a summary that leads with software and a result.
  • Ignoring compliance results. Zero GST notices and no late fees are exactly what a finance manager values, so state them.
  • A photo, date of birth, marital status or father's name. None of it belongs on a finance resume.
  • A wall of text with no whitespace, so a reviewer cannot find your software line in two seconds.
  • Errors in the numbers on the resume itself. Typos in figures on an accountant's resume undermine the one thing you are selling: accuracy.

Proofread every number on the page twice. An accountant's resume with an arithmetic or typo error in it contradicts the accuracy the whole document is claiming.

Certifications worth listing as a accountant

CertificationFull nameWorth it for
Tally CertifiedTally Certified ProfessionalThe baseline software credential for Indian accounting roles, especially for freshers and small to mid business accountants where Tally is the whole stack. Expected on early career resumes; assumed rather than listed once you have years of Tally work behind you.
GST PractitionerGST Practitioner Course, government approvedA clear signal for accountants in compliance heavy roles, and useful for freshers who want to show GST filing readiness before they have client experience. Best paired with real filing numbers on the resume rather than standing alone.
CA InterCA Intermediate, ICAIA strong differentiator for accountant and senior accountant roles, and often the credential that lifts a resume above B.Com only candidates. State the stage precisely, both groups cleared reads very differently from one group, and never imply CA qualified when you are CA Inter.
CAChartered Accountant, ICAIThe senior credential for controllership, taxation and finance manager roles, and effectively a requirement for many. Once qualified, it is the headline of the education section. Do not use it or its abbreviation unless you have actually cleared CA Final and are a member.
SAP FICOSAP FICO CertificationValuable for accountants targeting larger companies and shared service centres that run SAP, and a genuine differentiator versus Tally only candidates. Less relevant for small business roles where Tally or Zoho is the norm.

Accountant resume FAQ

How much do accountants earn in India, and should CTC go on the resume?

Junior accountant and B.Com fresher roles commonly pay 2.4 to 4 LPA, mid-level accountants with Tally, GST and CA Inter 5 to 9 LPA, and CA qualified finance managers 12 LPA and above, with SAP and controllership experience at the top of each band. Do not put your current or expected CTC on the resume. It anchors the negotiation before you have shown your value and belongs in the recruiter conversation, not the document.

How long should an accountant resume be?

One page up to about six years, two pages for a senior finance professional only if the second page carries real scope rather than a longer software list. A finance manager screens for your software and a measured result quickly, so clear whitespace and a visible software line matter more than length. If you cannot fit one page, compress the oldest role to a single line and drop coursework.

What software should an accountant list on the resume?

Whatever you can actually operate, named exactly and near the top: Tally Prime for most Indian roles, SAP FICO for larger companies and shared services, and Zoho Books or QuickBooks where relevant, plus advanced Excel. A finance recruiter filters on software before anything else, so a resume that omits the tool is often skipped. Only list what you could pass a practical test on, because finance interviews frequently include one.

How does a fresher write an accountant resume with no experience?

Lead with any internship or articleship, then education, then skills. Treat the internship as evidence you can record and reconcile accurately in real software: voucher volume in Tally, GST returns filed for a number of clients, a reconciliation backlog cleared, an accuracy figure the senior verified. B.Com project work, a GST practitioner course and any bookkeeping you did for a family business all count, because each shows hands on accounting rather than only theory.

Should I mention my CA status if I have not fully qualified?

Yes, but state the exact stage and never imply more than you have cleared. CA Inter both groups cleared, CA Inter one group, or CA Final pending are all legitimate and useful lines that lift you above B.Com only candidates. What ends a process is ambiguity that reads as inflation, so do not write CA or chartered accountant unless you are a member of ICAI. Precision here signals the integrity a finance employer is screening for.

How important are GST and TDS on an accountant resume?

Very. GST and TDS compliance is core to nearly every Indian accounting role, so name the specific returns you handle, GSTR-1, GSTR-3B, GSTR-9 and TDS returns, and attach a compliance outcome such as zero late fees or no notices. These are both keywords an applicant tracking system searches and results a finance manager values, because meeting the statutory deadline every period is a large part of the job.

Does an applicant tracking system reject accountant resumes with two columns?

It does not reject them outright, but some parsers read a two column layout out of order and scramble your software and compliance lines into the wrong place in the recruiter's view. A single column removes the risk, which is why all three samples above use one. Copy the text out of your PDF into a plain text editor; if your software names and figures read in the right order there, the parser will most likely get them too.
