A cover letter is the one-page letter you send with your resume explaining why you want this job at this company. A cover letter for freshers matters more than for anyone else: your resume can only list a degree, projects and skills, the letter is where you compensate for having no work experience.

Below: the 6-part structure, a format table, and 16 copy-paste samples covering CS/IT, data, core engineering, B.Com, MBA, HR, BCA, internships and career gaps.

Do freshers need a cover letter?

Yes. When every applicant has the same degree, the same 2026 graduation year and a similar CGPA, the resume gives HR nothing to choose between you.

  • Skip it only when the form explicitly says no cover letter.
  • Always send one when emailing HR directly, applying via referral, or applying outside your branch.
  • Never send a generic onea recycled letter is worse than none.

Common mistakes freshers make

MistakeWhy it hurtsFix
One generic letter for every companyThe missing company name is obviousRewrite the opening and closing per JD
Repeating the resume line by lineWastes your only page of contextTake 2 resume items, explain the how and the result
"To Whom It May Concern"Dated and impersonal"Dear Ms. [Last Name]" or "Dear Hiring Manager"
Typos, wrong company nameFastest route to instant rejectionRead aloud, check company and role twice
Two pages of textLong letters go unreadCap at 400 words, 4 paragraphs
Templates with columns and iconsParsers mangle multi-column layoutsSingle column, plain text, PDF

India-specific notes

  • Emailing HR directly is normal. Put a short version in the email body and attach the PDF with your resume, see our job application email guide.
  • "Job application letter" is the same documentmany Indian postings and placement cells use that phrasing.
  • Attach both files separatelyeach with your name in the file name.
  • Mention availability and relocation"available to join immediately" carries real weight in fresher hiring here.
  • Walk-ins: print two copies, one per resume copy. Leave salary out unless asked.

ATS-friendly formatting

  • Save as a PDF with selectable text, never a scan or screenshot.
  • One column. No text boxes, tables, headers/footers or graphics inside the letter.
  • Mirror the JD's wording: if it says "Power BI", write "Power BI", not "PowerBI".
  • Expand each acronym once: "Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)".
  • Keep contact details as plain text and stick to standard fonts.

FAQ

Do freshers need a cover letter?

Yes, unless the form explicitly says not to. Your resume looks like hundreds of others; the letter is the only place to explain your projects and your fit for the role.

How long should a fresher cover letter be?

250–400 words on one page, in 3–4 short paragraphs. If it runs over, cut the paragraph that repeats your resume.

PDF or Word?

PDF, it preserves formatting on every device. Send .docx only if the posting asks. Name it clearly: Priya-Nair-Cover-Letter-Data-Analyst.pdf.

Can I use the same cover letter for every job?

No. Keep your body paragraph as a reusable base, but rewrite the opening and closing each time to name the company, the role and one requirement from that JD. Two minutes of work, and it's the difference between being read and being skipped.

What if I have no experience at all, no internship, no project?

Write about coursework, certifications, college leadership, volunteering or self-taught work. Then close the gap: build one small project this month and add it, a single deployed project gives you something concrete to write about.
